What do you consider to be LSUA’s weaknesses that negatively impact student learning?

Mar 24, 2013 4:42 PMOur size is also a drawback in some ways as we can't provide all the opportunities and services as some larger schools. The predominantly commuter population is a negative. Although most of our students are NOT first generation college students despite the fact we throw that out there a lot, we do get many students without realistic expectations about college and course loads and studying, and who have no good role models. And frankly, the thing we don't like to talk about is not all faculty are focused on student learning. There's a great deal of inconsistently in that. We still have faculty who are mostly focused on what is easiest for them as a teacher or on just keeping students from complaining and passing them down the pipeline. There are others who honestly don't know what to do in terms of student learning and would probably be willing to work more at it if they had more training and more incentive, and more time. The inconsistency of focus on student learning is a hindrance to those who do focus on it in their classrooms. Students by and large will choose easy over learning. As an entire faculty and administration, I don't think we have yet created an environment, and peer pressure, and a support system, that are conducive to enhanced student learning.
Mar 16, 2013 9:25 AMFailure to recognize that everyone is important to retention Failure to take advantage of CTE programming to revitalize classroom learning Lack of first-year experience program No cohesive learning communities Failure to provide assisstance in reading Poorly trained students especially in areas of mathematics and science Lack of sufficient & timely Financial Aid information Need additional funding for academic & gap sholarships
Mar 15, 2013 12:02 PMFaculty members who don't really care whether they're students pass or fail or who have been using the same classroom practices for years even when they ahven't yielded good results.
Mar 14, 2013 10:22 PMVariations in outcomes. Some programs losing students in last semester.
Mar 14, 2013 11:59 AMThe economic situations in which LSUA students find themselves....having to work one or more jobs while going to school.
Mar 14, 2013 6:17 AMFaculty who do not see the issue; faculty who are insulated in their silos and who fail to recognize the need to assist students in succeeding. Faculty who think highly of themselves, perhaps more than is deserved.
Mar 13, 2013 1:25 PMThe lack of nights and weekend classes.
Mar 13, 2013 5:22 AM1. Faculty and staff that are demoralized by no financial incentives 2. Administration that does not apply the rules in a timely fashion 3. Inconsistency in applying the rules/sanctions for student infractions 4. Raising student fees (but don't see any way around this)
Mar 12, 2013 1:51 PMOur weakness can also be our faculty if we fail to understand how students learn and to apply the appropriate techniques in our classrooms that helps meet the needs of students based on their learning styles.
Mar 12, 2013 1:34 PMFaculty are so busy attending meetings and doing paperwork that students don't get the attention they need.
